Nutritional Therapy For Pain Relief

Learn about Nutritional therapy for pain relief. Explore dietary strategies and foods that may help reduce discomfort and improve your wellbeing.

Lot’s of people ask me how Nutritional Therapy can help them and how long it can take before they feel better. The answer to that depends on many factors but after just one consultation, Lucy felt so much better!  She felt more in control of which foods to reduce in her diet to alleviate aches and pains and had more energy to get through her busy working day.  I wanted to tell you about the entire consultation process start to finish, as we explore Lucy’s experience so you can get a feel for what Nutritional Therapy is all about.

Some people think that I only tell people what to eat, but Nutritional Therapy is so much more. It is all about you and your uniqueness. A personalised nutrition plan aims to get to the root cause of symptoms quickly and effectively whilst supercharging your health.

So, what is Nutritional Therapy?

You can think of me a bit like a health detective. I search for clues in your symptoms, diet, lifestyle and family history which creates a picture of where your health is being influenced by your genes, environment and diet. Building a personalised nutrition plan to help you achieve your health goals is the very best way to get resolution for what might feel like a lifetime of suffering.

Who does Nutritional Therapy help?

Nutritional Therapy can help anyone who has got an existing condition or symptoms or for those who are confused over what they should be eating. There is so much conflicting advice available on Dr Google it is easy to lose your way.

It is invaluable for busy people who focus attention on family and work first and often forget about themselves! We are often so busy in our every-day lives that we grab and go with quick snacks and food that saves time but are low in nutrients. My clients experience outlined below is one such case; a very busy working Mum called Lucy; you may see many comparisons to your own situation.

Lucy’s 1:1 Nutrition Consultation

I firstly sent Lucy some online forms to complete which I analyse and built a profile of her main health goals, and concerns. I checked for nutrition depletions and interactions for her medication, researched existing conditions and her health history. She wanted help with her extreme fatigue, aches and pains primarily. She had suffered with these symptoms all of her life but now as a busy working Mum on her feet all day felt she was running on empty.

She is probably a lot like you and me; balancing a home, family and work life with chronically low energy, poor sleep but her aches and pains plagued her every day. She often relied upon quick and easy snacks to help her keep going. As a gut health specialist, I wanted to drill down and find the root cause of some issues which she said had been going on for many years suffering with chronic constipation and bloating.

Changes to Eating Habits & Diet

Lucy found it very helpful when I explained that her food choices and eating on the go could be attributing to her fatigue and constipation. She told me that she ate her food very quickly as she was always short on time and needed to get on with her job (sound familiar?).

There were some key nutrients missing from Lucy’s diet which was low in B vitamins, magnesium and fibre.  These nutrients are critical for energy production and were also adding to her constipation and poor sleep. I made some simple suggestions for easy swaps to ensure she was got more fruit, vegetables and wholegrain in her daily regime. I also recommended some specific supplements to help with energy levels, constipation and sleep.

Functional Testing for Nutritional Deficiencies

In addition I suspected vitamin D deficiency which is commonly linked to fatigue, aches and pains and what with us being in the northern hemisphere in the UK and not getting enough sunlight it was very unlikely that she would be getting enough.

I recommended testing to check for deficiencies that could be attributing to her aches and pains. You can find out more: Do you have vitamin D deficiency?

We worked together to build a realistic, achievable health plan; to make some tweaks to her breakfast and lunches and made sure she was including enough energy-releasing nutrients such as folate, magnesium and fibre to provide a slower releasing energy and reduce her aches and pains..

Lucy’s experience in her own words:

This is what Lucy had to say herself about the consultation process:

“Recently had an hour consultation with Evie. I have been suffering with lots of aches and pains and feeling that I was lacking certain vitamins and minerals. I was pleased as Evie had already sent me a questionnaire prior to our meeting, so she was up to date on what I was hoping to get out of the session.

Evie recommended lots of easy changes. Such as healthier swaps for breakfast, snacks. The recommended portions of fruit and veg. Also ideas to aid regular bowel movements (thats now working a treat!). Taking vitamin D drops and Magnesium tablets daily. I am now having a bath with epsom salts regularly, which is helping. It was interesting to hear some basic science about my eating habits (I eat very quickly). Also what certain foods are going to be better for me than others. I now add salad, veg or fruit to every meal and am a lot more mindful of what I’m putting into my body. I’m looking forward to seeing more benefits of Evie’s advice as the month goes on.”

The plan we created was unique, tailor-made just for Lucy so she had really laser-targeted recommendations along with tasty recipes of food she loves, and some helpful guides on nutrition to help her implement these changes.
